Coronavirus and Scripture, Part I of III

I am afraid it is a fact of life that this world is under a curse.

It all began when our ancestors rejected the
Instructions of the Lord our God.

When that happened God told our ancestors directly that,

“… cursed is the ground for your sake. In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.”
Gen 3:17

Not all of the environmental problems we have are because of trash or plastic bags or oil on the ground or in the water. Our sins bring a curse on both our work and on our environment.

Now God can either help us or oppose us,
and He often does.

The prophet Jeremiah spoke of how God often deals with nations.

“7 At what instant I shall speak concerning A nation, and concerning A kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; 8 if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them. 9 At what instant I shall speak concerning A nation, and concerning A kingdom, to build and to plant it; 10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.”
Jer 18:7-10

God is the one who gives us prosperity or discipline. We may think our work gives us what is good, but God says,

“17 and lest you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth. 18 But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day.”
Deut 8:17-18

He can send people to oppose us, or can give us peace with other men.

When a man’s ways please Yahweh,
He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Prov 16:7

God Himself disciplines the nations

Sometimes we may think God doesn’t even know what we are doing, but the Bible says something different in Psalm 94.

“8 Consider, you senseless among the people;
You fools, when will you be wise?
9 He who implanted the ear, won’t he hear?
He who formed the eye, won’t he see?
10 He who disciplines the nations, won’t he punish?
He who teaches man knows.
11 Yahweh knows the thoughts of man,
That they are futile.
12 Blessed is the man whom you discipline, Yah,
And teach out of your law;
13 That you may give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked.”
Psa 94:8-13

We live in a world in which things have gone wrong,
WE have gone wrong.

So now things can go wrong against us! Including things like viruses.

“From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

“Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
lead us from night, to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory laud and praise be ever Thine.”

From our National Hymn, “God of Our Fathers.”

Romans 8 speaks of that principle of Physics
called “entropy,” or the Second Law
of Thermodynamics.

It calls it vanity, and our “bondage to decay,” and does say that one day,

“that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.”
Rom 8:21

It hasn’t happened yet, but it will ! Jesus offers it through His gospel. Despite Covid-19

Keys to Prophecy: Not all Prophecy has Been Fulfilled!

It is not very hard to find unfulfilled prophecies in Scripture. Now some have misinterpreted, for instance, Luke 24. Jesus is explaining what has happened after His resurrection from the dead.

“26 Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?” 27 Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Lk 24:26-27 WEB

Some have gone a little beyond what it says here, and claim that Christ fulfilled (past tense) ALL of prophecy.

Some do the same with Acts 3.

So they quote,

“But the things which God announced by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled.
Acts 3:18 WEB

So they say, see! Christ has already fulfilled all prophecy. But it does not say that. Rather it says that the prophecies about what “Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled.” That is much different.

Further, they tend to completely ignore the very next three verses.

“19 “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that he may send Christ Jesus, who was ordained for you before, 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God spoke long ago by the mouth of his holy prophets.”
Acts 3:19-21 WEB

So there are “times of restoration” verse 21, and Jesus must stay in heaven until these times, and God spoke of these things long ago by the mouth of his holy prophets. So there are prophecies which have not yet been fulfilled. It even goes further than this a few verses down, where it says,

“Yes, and all the prophets from Samuel and those who followed after, as many as have spoken, they also told of these days.”
Acts 3:24 WEB

Some of this is anti-prophecy material

Many have a vested interest in our not understanding the prophets. They are pertinent not only to us, but to the entire Christian age.

Peter tells us prophecy is the lamp of our age.

Peter tells us that prophecy is the lamp of our age, but MANY do NOT believe that, even of those who consider themselves solid Bible believers. Did Peter lie? Or are we mixed up?

“We have the more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the day star arises in your hearts:”
2Pe 1:19 WEB

That itself tells us that much is yet to be fulfilled. And in context Peter is talking mainly about Old Testament prophecy as a “lamp shining in a dark place” for the Christian Age. For he says,

“20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation. 21 For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.”
2Pe 2:20-21 WEB

Someone is mixed up!

Either Peter is mixed up when he calls prophecy the lamp of our age … or you and I are mixed up.

The rest is common sense, and carefully looking at the passages we are reading.

Keys to Prophecy: God Does Act in History!

No! This is not about the confused issues of “miracles.”

Some think that anything that God does is a miracle but that is not so. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines “miracle” as,

“a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency: the miracle of rising from the grave.”

The rest of the story is that God does not always operate outside of “natural or scientific laws.” Mankind always operates within “natural or scientific laws,” and can do many things that way, and so can God!

Job comments of God’s actions, and points out that,

“11 Behold, he goes by me, and I don’t see him.
He passes on also, but I don’t perceive him.
12 Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him?
Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’”
Job 9:11-12 WEB

And this is all the time, not just every now and then.

In Psalm 104 it talks in detail about God working in what we would probably call “nature.” It speaks of God as being the one who feeds all the creatures on both land and sea. Further it comments,

It is not just the big events of history, such as the Tower of Babel, where God works, but also in day to day things.

“28 You give to them; they gather.
You open your hand; they are satisfied with good.
29 You hide your face: they are troubled;
You take away their breath: they die, and return to the dust.
30 You send forth your Spirit: they are created.
You renew the face of the ground. ”
Psa 104:28-30 WEB

It pictures God as intimately involved in all that goes on.

The same is true for the big events of history.

“The horse is prepared for the day of battle;
But victory is with Yahweh.”
Prov 21:31 WEB

“He changes the times and the seasons; he removes kings, and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding;”
Dan 2:21 WEB

Or again,

“All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or tell him, What do you?”
Dan 4:35 WEB

Man can want/will to do something, but God often overrules

“The plans of the heart belong to man,
But the answer of the tongue is from Yahweh.”
Prov 16:1 WEB

“There are many plans in a man’s heart,
But Yahweh’s counsel will prevail.”
Prov 19:21 WEB

And if your ways please God? God will help you,

“When a man’s ways please Yahweh,
He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
Prov 16:7 WEB

And,

“Commit your deeds to Yahweh,
And your plans shall succeed.”
Prov 16:3 WEB

And when God needs something done, what does He often do? God will put it into the hearts of men to do it, just as in Rev 17:17

This is not a complete discussion of God’s workings.

But it is a sampler of His working everyday in many ways.

Talking About Heaven, Part III of III

Most of us want to have a body. Our decaying human body in this world is compared to a tent.

“For indeed we who are in this tent do groan, being burdened; not that we desire to be unclothed, but that we desire to be clothed, that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.”y
2Cor 5:4 WEB

At times we may be dismayed by our malfunctioning of bodies in this life, but we would not be without a body. The movie pictures of us in heaven as being bodiless spirits drifting here and there are not very satisfying. These bodiless pictures of heaven are from the occult, NOT from Scripture.

When we die,

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. ”
Eccl 12:7 WEB

But Job says he will see his Redeemer
in his flesh!

“26 After my skin is destroyed,
Then in my flesh shall I see God,
27 Whom I, even I, shall see on my side.
My eyes shall see, and not as a stranger. …”
Job 19:26-27 WEB

We will have a body.

“38 But God gives it a body even as it pleased him, and to each seed a body of its own. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. 40 There are also celestial bodies, and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial differs from that of the terrestrial.”
1Cor 15:38-40 WEB

“42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.”
1Cor 15:42-43 WEB

“51 Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.”
1Cor 15:51-53 WEB

Scripture tells us our body will be like Jesus body, 1Jn 3:2. But we will have a body.

“But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead

“dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
Rom 8:11 WEB

It will be a building as compared to our present
body as a tent.

“For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.”

Talking About Heaven, Part II of III

As has been discussed, a world dominated by sin and death is falling apart. In physics it is called the Second Law of Thermodynamics, that is to say, things run down, things decay, and fall apart

We are made so that we need rest.

In rest and in sleep, we can repair some of the loss. Even so our ability to repair loss and ruin and decay is limited. If you stick your finger in a fan and knock some of the skin off of your finger, then your body can over time repair that loss of skin, and restore your finger to like new. However, if that fan actually cuts off part of your finger … well … you will never be able to grow back that finger. We do not have that sort of regenerative capability.

And even our senses run down.

In a world dominated by sin and death that is often a good thing. This means if we are surrounded by death and stinking decay, we may at first accurately sense the stink and the filth. It is nauseating, and we can hardly stand it. But if we are forced to stay around the stink, then after a little while our sense of the stinking decay tends to run down. After a little while, it does not bother us quite so bad. In a world dominated by sin and death that can be a good thing, within limits.

It is the same for many of our very stupid mistakes and slip-ups. At first the shame of how dumb we have been is overwhelming. But fortunately that sense of being so shamefully stupid wears off. Thank God! Imagine how bad it would be if we fully and accurately felt that shame and embarrassment forever! That would be hard to bear. So it is in part a good thing that our senses also run down.

Part of the other side of that of course is when we are trying to fully enjoy something that is good or beautiful. Almost all of us have had times when we came across a song or a piece of music that was so beautiful that we could not get enough of it. We played it, we listened to it over and over and over and seemingly could not get enough of it. Even at our best though, after a while our senses run down, and we can no longer enjoy that music as we once did.

In heaven, in the new universe NOT dominated by
sin and death and decay,

we will be able to perfectly enjoy good things forever. We will be purified from all wickedness and decay forever.

And since things will not run down in this
new universe without sin and death,

we will not need and rest.

“but those who wait for Yahweh shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.”

Men, Angels and the Christ in Prophecy, Part 9 of 9

The author of Hebrews concludes that the purpose of angels is to serve those who will inherit eternal life, Heb 1:14. Then he turns to the subject of men in chapter two. He quotes part of Psalm 8 by David about “man,” and “the world to come,” Heb 2:5.

“6 … “What is man, that you think of him?
Or the son of man, that you care for him?
7 You made him a little lower than the angels;
You crowned him with glory and honor.
8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” …”
Heb 2:6-8a WEB

This is man made in the very image of God, for now a little lower than the angels, and ordained for great things.

So mankind is SUPPOSED TO HAVE dominance
over ALL.

Then comes those things which we all run into in prophecy. Those things which seem odd or out of place. The author notes it appears nothing is left out of man’s control.

“… For in that he subjected all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. …”
Heb 2:8b WEB

Indeed this is the fabric of much of our lives here on earth. We work at this function or that function in managing this earth, and bringing to usefulness its many resources. Those functions may range from killing flies in the kitchen, to managing water resources, to making useful tools and machines for using these resources.

But then there is that part which just does not fit the facts.

“But now we don’t see all things subjected to him, yet.”
Heb 2:8c

Man does not yet have all of this power. There are things missing. There are holes in man’s dominance. We would like to have control of this or that, but, frustratingly, despite great progress in many arenas, much remains outside our control, just as Heb 2:8c says so clearly!

As my books note, such gaps between what is often prophesied, and what is seen in reality, is often the sign of symbolism in the prophecy, of a “type” or a “prototype”.

So man does not have the mastery he should have, yet.

“But we see him who has been made a little
lower than the angels, Jesus,

“because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone. ”
Heb 2:9 WEB

So Hebrews sees man’s dominance as always to be accomplished through Jesus! Through Jesus man recovers his position before God, and achieves his rightful position over creation. So it is not Satan and his angels, or even angels overall, who will dominate the world to come. It is man.

“Don’t you know that we will judge angels?” 1Cor 6:3.

Permanent punishment is prepared for those that oppose God, whether in heaven or in earth.

“Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels;”

Men, Angels and the Christ in Prophecy, Part 8 of 9

Satan was able to appear to Jesus in the flesh.

Compare the story in Matthew chapter four. Both knew who the other was. Satan has been granted considerable latitude in testing and trying to seduce men. He tries to get Jesus to worship him, and fails. He is “the ruler of this world” Jn 12:31. He is allowed to make great offers to Jesus.

“8 Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory. 9 He said to him, “I will give you all of these things, if you will fall down and worship me.””
Mtt 4:8-9 WEB

Yes, though constrained to this creation in our day, Satan has much power, but that is not all of the story.

Elisha was in a terrible bind in 2 Kings chapter 6.

The King of Aram has Elijah surrounded in the small town of Dothan. What the Hebrew text calls “Aram,” the KJV calls Syria (which it is today.) When Elisha’s servant arose the next day, look! The whole city was surrounded by horses and chariots. He asked Elisha, What shall we do?

Greater are those who are with us

“16 He answered, Don’t be afraid; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. 17 Elisha prayed, and said, Yahweh, Please open his eyes, that he may see. Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.”
2Kfs 6:16 WEB

But it not just the number of men versus the number of angels, or even of good angels versus bad angels.

“What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Rom 8:31 WEB

We as Christians have the living God Himself living in us, if we stay with Him.

“Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
1Cor 3:16 WEB

What good news it is to have Yahweh God Himself as our deliverer. Or as the apostle John put it,

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.”
1Jn 4:4 WEB

Or as the psalmist put it,

“Though he stumble, he shall not fall,
For Yahweh holds him up with his hand.”
Psa 37:24

What is it then that can overcome us?

“38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ”
Rom 8:38-39 WEB

Powerful enemies for us? Yes! But powerful supporters also.

and book of Revelation?

It is a series of parallel overlapping visions which show … many trials? Yes. And ultimate victory! Also yes!

Men, Angels and the Christ in Prophecy, Part 6 of 9

The proper function of angels is still observed by
MOST of the heavenly angels

Now angels in Scripture are called “sons of God” in Job chapters one and two, and are associated with “stars.” I am not trying here to explain that association, rather I am just trying show you that it is there. A clear example is,

“When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
Job 38:7 WEB

There is an account of the battle in heaven in Revelation 12 between good angels and bad angels. There is a “great red dragon” Rev 12:4, who is called the devil and Satan,” Rev 12:9. This “dragon” is able to draw one-third of the angels/stars of heaven into his revolt, Rev 12:4.

So it is that most of the angels of heaven
(a good two-thirds of them)

are still serving God. The purpose of angels is given in Hebrews 1.

“Aren’t they all ministering spirits, sent out to do service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?”
Heb 1:14 WEB

This is clearly reflected the many verses and stories in Scripture. They are not, however, always seen by men. An angel helps Hagar in Genesis 16 in a very visible way. Angels arrived as men in Sodom in the beginning of Genesis 19 in order guide Lot to safety. Satan appeared as serpent to Eve, and angels appear as men when they meet Abraham in Genesis 18, and Abraham prepares a meal for them and they eat that meal. The author of Hebrews counsels us,

“Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.”
Heb 13:2 WEB

Angels diligently look after the righteous.

“For he will give his angels charge over you,
To guard you in all your ways. ”
Psa 91:11

There is a special angel of the presence of the Lord that is mentioned in Scripture. This is a “messenger” who is intimately involved with Yahweh. (Some speculate that it is Jesus Himself, but if so, that is not clearly stated.)

“In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bore them, and carried them all the days of old.”
Isa 63:9 WEB

They are mighty in power and can have astonishing results when they are instructed to do so.

“The angel of Yahweh went forth, and struck in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.”
Isa 37:36 WEB

Those who are inclined to abuse children
are warned by Jesus,

“See that you don’t despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”
Mtt 18:10 WEB

Knowledge of that should affect how men treat children, today, and always.

Men, Angels and the Christ in Prophecy, Part 5 of 9

A Trans-Universe War between men and
evil spiritual powers.

Perhaps even before man was created, there began a great revolt against God’s rule and authority, a revolt that began in heaven itself. Was it really before the creation of man? We do not know for sure but it sure seems so. When man was created, and the woman made for the man, it seems that Satan, symbolically called that Great Serpent or the Devil was already there. Ready to seduce and ruin mankind as best he could.

“Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, “Yes, has God said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?’””
Gen 3:1 WEB

You might say that our historic great grandmother bit! Then she got our original progenitor to bite. So we, all of mankind, joined that historic revolt again God Himself.

So it was that great curses fell on both
men and angels,
and men were altered at the DNA level.

Men began the processes of dying, and he lost access to the tree of life. This is not the place to discuss all the ramification of mankind’s fall, but some key points should be noted.

Satan was cursed, the woman was cursed, the man was cursed, and the creation was cursed, because of sin! Lastly, the stage was set for an age long war between mankind and the evil principalities and powers.

““I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.””
Gen 3:15 WEB

As Paul put it,

“For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Eph 6:12 WEB

This ultimately leads to a war in heaven itself.

There are armies in heaven. Remember Part III, the hosts (armies) of heaven and the Lord of Hosts? Remember that in Job’s day Satan was still able to appear before the Yaweh in heaven. That evidently changed around the time of the cross.

“7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
Rev 12:7-9 KJV

This war now continues in this created universe.

You and I as men have often served these
evil spiritual masters.

“However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.”
Gal 4:8 WEB

But Jesus has come to deliver us from these
Satanic powers which would destroy us,

Men, Angels and the Christ in Prophecy, Part 1 of 9

Angels are special creatures. We often speak of them as spiritual creatures. Creatures of a higher order men. They are creatures “greater in might and power” than men, 2Pe 2:11 WEB, but they are indeed “creatures.” That is to say, created beings. God is the One (1Tim 6:13) …

who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen. ”
1Tim 6:16 WEB

Others, all others, live or die at His good pleasure. The angels are not god or gods. As Yahweh Himself said,

“See now that I, even I, am he,
There is no god with me:
I kill, and I make alive;
I wound, and I heal;
There is none who can deliver out of my hand.”
Deut 32:39 WEB

ALL others in the universe are ALL beings, created by this single God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
Jn 1:1-4 WEB

Angels have functions in ruling over and directing
various parts of creation.

In the occult (religion that is secret or semi-secret) and in occult literature, angels are often referred to as “thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.” These terms refer to both their authority and power under God. Also the apostle Paul uses these terms to refer angels, many of whom have turned to become the enemy of all mankind. Paul says,

“For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Eph 6:12 WEB

Paul is indeed talking about angels.

But they are indeed CREATED beings, NOT gods.

We have already seen that all things were created through Jesus (Jn 1:3). Paul is even more specific and says of Jesus the Christ,

For by him were all things created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and for him.”
Col 1:16 WEB

Wow! What a dramatic statement of fact, of the basic creaturehood of angels, ALL the angels. Paul goes even further and says of Jesus, that

“He is before all things, and in him all things
are held together.” Col 1:17 WEB

In other words, what makes both all the universe, and men, and animals and fish and birds and angels hold together is Jesus Himself. In fact it says basically the same thing in Hebrews.

“His Son is … upholding all things by the word of his power, …”
Heb 1:3 WEB
