Keys to Prophecy: The Kingdom is Growing Even Now

The kingdom has been established, that is not a this-earth kingdom, Jn 18:36, and as discussed in the previous post.

Jesus has all the attributes of a king.

He has sat down on His Father’s throne in heaven.

“He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne.”
Rev 3:21 WEB

The “sat down with my Father” is a Greek aorist-active-infinitive, and is correctly translated as “sat down,” a past event.

Besides having a throne over Israel, and indeed over the entire earth, Jesus has all of the authority He needs.

“… “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.””
Mtt 28:18 WEB

This power is verified in more than one place. The Father has given Jesus authority over ALL flesh, Jn 17:2. Further, “The Father loves the Son, and has given ALL things into his hand,” Jn 3:35 He can do anything He wants with anyone or anything.

He rules NOW until …

“24 Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Kingdom to God, even the Father; when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.”
1Cor 15:24-26

The phrase “must reign” is a Greek present-active-infinitive, indication actions going on continuously in the present, until all of His enemies have been put down.

And Jesus making men citizens of His
kingdom NOW.

We Gentiles were at one time alienated from this kingdom.

“that you WERE at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, …”
Eph 2:12

The word translated as “ commonwealth” in many translations, is the word politeia, which is talking about citizenship, being part of a certain political unit. We gentiles (the nations) are now a part of the political unit, this kingdom of which Christ is the King, this commwealth if you will.

“13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition, 15 having abolished in the flesh the hostility, the law of commandments …”
Eph 2:13-15 WEB

Jews and Gentiles in Christ are now citizens
of the same political unit.

“19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, 20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;”
Eph 2:19-20 WEB

Jesus is leading all of his sheep to be part of one flock, Jn 10:16.

You “are” “Fellow citizens” sum-polites a word that is a combination of sum with, and the word for citizen polites.

The kingdom is NOW!

Men are getting in on the ground floor of the only eternal kingdom. The kingdom which will rule over ALL of the New Heavens and New Earth, Isa 65:17, Rev 21:1-2, 2Pe 3:13.

Keys to Prophecy: The Kingdom is NOT of this World

Jesus avoided a kingdom in this world,
even at the “right” time!

Jesus was performing some very powerful actions in John chapter 6, and He fed a crowd of thousands with one little boy’s lunch. Then it says,

“When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.””
Jn 6:14 WEB

So people were believing in Him. However, was this to be about a kingdom in this world?

“Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.”
Jn 6:15 WEB

Jesus did NOT want a kingdom in this world. He could have had it in the first century, during His first coming. But that was not the plan. And what was planned was accomplished!

He announced it was not a “this earth” kingdom.

Really, this is reflected in His parables about “the kingdom of heaven.” Some would say that is about the heaven ruling over this earth, but heaven, and God on His throne, has always ruled over this earth (cf. Dan 4:17, and many other passages).

Then Jesus got very specific when being questioned by Pilate during that farce of His trial. Pilate asked Him directly during His trial. “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jn 18:33. Jesus then asked Pilate if he were asking this on his own or did someone else say that about Jesus. Pilate then responded, “I am not a Jew am I? … What have you done?” Jn 18:34.

Jesus then gave a succinct answer.

“My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.”
Jn 18:36 WEB

Not of this earth, not a this creation, but part of a new glorious creation when God makes all things new, Rev 21:1.

Pilate realized Jesus was NOT a contender for
an earthly kingdom.

So then he said to the Jews and the mob, “I find no basis for a charge against him.” Jn 18:38 WEB

“I find no basis for a charge against him.” Jn 18:38 WEB

This world is in the process of passing away.

“… For the form of this world is passing away.”
1Cor 7:31 nf

Some want a worldly kingdom HERE, with their own
messiah ruling over all.

But that was NOT what was promised. Rather God said.

“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
Isa 65:17 WEB

That is to say, a new universe where righteousness dwells, and of which sin and decay and entropy have no part. Jesus will not come to rule at some special time on earth. Rather He rules heaven and earth NOW, and will continue until all of His enemies are put down, 1Cor 15:24-26!

The premillennialist are confusing prophecies of heaven with prophecies of this present world.

nf is my own translation based on the WEB.

Out of the North, Part III of III

Not all the references to the North seem to have an earthly reference. When Ezekiel has a vision of God, it seems it comes out of the North.

“I looked, and, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, a great cloud, with flashing lightning, and a brightness round about it, and out of the midst of it as it were glowing metal, out of the midst of the fire.” Ezek 1:4 WEB

Then there follows a dazzling vision of God and of the four living creatures which surround him.

God? From the North?

There are other references, which could be taken more than one way.

“Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion, on the north sides,
The city of the great King.” Psa 48:2 WEB

The KJV and the New King James Version says “on the sides of the north.” The New American Standard Bible, 1995 edition, and the English Standard Version say “Mount Zion in the far north.” Taken this way it would seem to say that the “true” Mount Zion is in the far north, and earthly Mount Zion is only symbolic of the true Zion in heaven!

The Hebrew word is yerekah, and can mean the side of something, the flanks, or can mean the extremes or far parts of something. None of the translations are entirely satisfying. Mount Zion on the North sides? Well, maybe, but look at some maps. Mount Zion in the far North? Mount Zion is not really in the North at all, of anything. Perhaps we should come back to this.

Or again, where does exaltation come from?

“6 For neither from the east, nor from the west,
Nor yet from the south, comes exaltation.
7 But God is the judge.
He puts down one, and lifts up another.”
Psa 75:6-7 WEB

Here is another enigmatic passage. Exaltation is clearly from the Lord, but look how it states this. Exaltation is not from the east or the west or south, … but it leaves out the North, and says exaltation is from God, and seems to imply that His throne is in the North!

When Isaiah writes of Satan’s revolt
against God in Isaiah 14, it says.

“You said in your heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit on the mountain of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north;” Isa 14:13 WEB

This is a far plainer passage about where “heaven” is. Further this word “uttermost” is again that word yerekah. If you take the KJV on this passage, then heaven is “in the sides of the north,” “above the stars of God“!

Where does God come from?

The book of Job of course far precedes those later times when Assyria and Babylon are such powerful entities. But Job speaks of the North in more than one place.

“Out of the north comes golden splendor;
With God is awesome majesty.”
Job 37:22 WEB

Other translations are more explicit.

“He comes from the north as golden splendor;
With God is awesome majesty.”
Job 37:22 New King James Version

Putting them together, it does seem to suggest that heaven is North of our earth, and that God will come out of the North.

KJV is the King James Version, 1611.

Talking About Heaven, Part III of III

Most of us want to have a body. Our decaying human body in this world is compared to a tent.

“For indeed we who are in this tent do groan, being burdened; not that we desire to be unclothed, but that we desire to be clothed, that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.”y
2Cor 5:4 WEB

At times we may be dismayed by our malfunctioning of bodies in this life, but we would not be without a body. The movie pictures of us in heaven as being bodiless spirits drifting here and there are not very satisfying. These bodiless pictures of heaven are from the occult, NOT from Scripture.

When we die,

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. ”
Eccl 12:7 WEB

But Job says he will see his Redeemer
in his flesh!

“26 After my skin is destroyed,
Then in my flesh shall I see God,
27 Whom I, even I, shall see on my side.
My eyes shall see, and not as a stranger. …”
Job 19:26-27 WEB

We will have a body.

“38 But God gives it a body even as it pleased him, and to each seed a body of its own. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. 40 There are also celestial bodies, and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial differs from that of the terrestrial.”
1Cor 15:38-40 WEB

“42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.”
1Cor 15:42-43 WEB

“51 Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.”
1Cor 15:51-53 WEB

Scripture tells us our body will be like Jesus body, 1Jn 3:2. But we will have a body.

“But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead

“dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
Rom 8:11 WEB

It will be a building as compared to our present
body as a tent.

“For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.”

Talking About Heaven, Part II of III

As has been discussed, a world dominated by sin and death is falling apart. In physics it is called the Second Law of Thermodynamics, that is to say, things run down, things decay, and fall apart

We are made so that we need rest.

In rest and in sleep, we can repair some of the loss. Even so our ability to repair loss and ruin and decay is limited. If you stick your finger in a fan and knock some of the skin off of your finger, then your body can over time repair that loss of skin, and restore your finger to like new. However, if that fan actually cuts off part of your finger … well … you will never be able to grow back that finger. We do not have that sort of regenerative capability.

And even our senses run down.

In a world dominated by sin and death that is often a good thing. This means if we are surrounded by death and stinking decay, we may at first accurately sense the stink and the filth. It is nauseating, and we can hardly stand it. But if we are forced to stay around the stink, then after a little while our sense of the stinking decay tends to run down. After a little while, it does not bother us quite so bad. In a world dominated by sin and death that can be a good thing, within limits.

It is the same for many of our very stupid mistakes and slip-ups. At first the shame of how dumb we have been is overwhelming. But fortunately that sense of being so shamefully stupid wears off. Thank God! Imagine how bad it would be if we fully and accurately felt that shame and embarrassment forever! That would be hard to bear. So it is in part a good thing that our senses also run down.

Part of the other side of that of course is when we are trying to fully enjoy something that is good or beautiful. Almost all of us have had times when we came across a song or a piece of music that was so beautiful that we could not get enough of it. We played it, we listened to it over and over and over and seemingly could not get enough of it. Even at our best though, after a while our senses run down, and we can no longer enjoy that music as we once did.

In heaven, in the new universe NOT dominated by
sin and death and decay,

we will be able to perfectly enjoy good things forever. We will be purified from all wickedness and decay forever.

And since things will not run down in this
new universe without sin and death,

we will not need and rest.

“but those who wait for Yahweh shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.”

Talking About Heaven, Part I of III

This present universe is under a curse!

It is because of sin, because of rebellion, against the Lord our God in our present universe. It appears that this rebellion started before before man was created, but it is not clear how long before man was created.

Even matter is temporary.

Now we come to a fundamental law of our universe. The actual “laws” of science are few and far between. Even so, some of what we sometimes call “laws” are only rules that only work within some pretty narrow limits, that is to say they are not really “laws.” But one of the fundamental laws of our universe is what is sometimes called “The Second law of Thermodynamics.” It is also called “Entropy,” or to state it another way: Things run down. In our universe things to go from order to disorder, and the amount of energy available to do any work is steadily diminishing.

One of the astonishing things which came out of the early nuclear work of Madam Curie and others is that sometimes even matter itself disintegrates The atoms themselves are unstable, they disintegrate.. The most unstable of our elements are called “radioactive,” and they steadily loose small particles as they disintegrate to other forms of matter.

Take your room, your house, or your
car or lawnmower.

You do not have to do something to them for them to disintegrate, for them to rundown, for them to slide into disorder and ruin. Just leaven them alone and they will do that on their own. Entropy, things run down.

Even our bodies, even when starting out correctly, over time disintegrate.

The sun, it turns out is a giant hydrogen bomb.

Now how fast does a hydrogen bomb convert matter into energy? I do not know how to express that mathematically, but it is very fast. Realizing that the Sun is such a giant bomb, it would be natural to expect that it is shrinking, and very fast, and it is!

The British Greenwich Observatory and the U. S. Naval Observatory did a 90 year study of the Sun’s diameter, and the result of that study is that the Sun is shrinking at an astonishing six feet per hour! (Eddy and Boornazian, 1979. “Secular decrease in the solar diameter, 1863-1953.” Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society, 11:437.)

But if the earth was 4 or 5 billion years old, it would mean that the earth would have been inside the sun. We are about 93 million miles from the sun. Run the figures for yourself. This and much other evidence points to a relatively young solar system, and a young earth.

Scripture calls the Second Law of Thermodynamics
the law of sin and death.

And one day, a new universe, called “a new heavens and a new earth,” Isa 65:17, 2Pe 3:13, etc., will be created, which will not be subject to this law.

“that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.”
Rom 8:21 WEB

That will indeed be heaven.

Identifying Some Types, Part 9 of 9

Ancient Israel has a huge “exodus” from the
Egypt of this world

They had been in bondage in Egypt, a bondage directed by the Pharaoh as a type of the god of this world (2Cor 4:4). Then God personally delivered them from Egypt and bondage, and put a separation between them and the Egypt of this world, and led them into the promised land.

A new “god” of this world will come.

“he who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God.”
2Thes 2:4 WEB

This man has the entire world worship him.

“All who dwell on the earth will worship him …”
Rev 13:8 WEB

This has obviously NOT happened yet! No one man has been worshipped by “all,” yet! He will be destroyed by Christ’ second coming, 2Thes 2:8, Rev 19:20.

This man will overcome the church.

“It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them.
Rev 13:7 WEB

I am sorry to tell you this folks. Rome and the caesars did NOT overcome the church. Instead the church overcame Rome and the caesars! But this beast will overcome the church.

And one more time the true church will be forced
out into the wilderness.

The church is pictured as the faithful woman.

“The woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that there they may nourish her one thousand two hundred sixty days.”
Rev 12:6 WEB

Hosea speaks of the future of what God “will” do.

““Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
And bring her into the wilderness,
And speak tenderly to her.”
Hos 2:14 WEB

For the days that this vicious beast rules (1,260), the church will be protected in the wilderness (Rev 12:6 above).

God will send plagues on the beast and his kingdom
like the plagues of Egypt.

Read of those plagues in Revelation chapters 15 and 16, and other places in Revelation and the rest of Scripture. They are very much like the plagues God sent on Egypt in 15th century BC, including waters turning to blood, darkness, and hail and all the rest.

Then will come Greater Exodus to Come

Ancient Israel came out of Egypt, into the wilderness, an into a this world promised land. The saints will have an exodus, The Great Exodus into the wilderness, and then into the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells, 2Pe 3:13.

“16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, 17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.”
1The 4:16-17 WEB

The Greater Exodus into the Greater Promised land.

Understanding types is essential for understanding prophecy. This has been some practice.

Identifying Some Types, Part 7 of 9

Some practice with types.

Rivers are indeed substantial barriers to ready crossing, especially to armies on the move. If you have a great river like the Mississippi, bridges are few and far between. Sometimes great landmarks in our lives here on earth are such barriers. Death is the ultimate one of these. It is at intellectually known, often dreaded or feared. As it is written, Jesus came that he,

“and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Heb 2:15 WEB

So what is the last river we cross before we
enter the true promised land?

For us as Christians it is obviously the river of death, that dreaded of all obstacles. And the last obstacle the children of Israel had to pass before the promised land was the river Jordan. It is thus a fitting symbol of our death before entering heaven.

Our songbooks are full of testimony to
Jordan as the river of death.

“On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand and cast a wishful eye,
to Canaan’s fair and happy land, where my possessions lie.”

“One more river, and that wide river is Jordan …”

And so on. These songs and sentiments are not out of place. It is implicitly part the imagery of Canaan as the promised land of heaven, and rising to take possession of it.

And when we finally come to the river of death?

What happened when Israel finally came to the Jordan? The priests led the way bearing the ark of the covenant. They were to stop when their feet were in the water, and the waters stopped flowing, “and rose up in one heap, a great way off.” The people of the land upstream were drowned by the waters, and the children of Israel passed over on dry ground.

So it is that the children of God cross over the river of death on dry ground, but the wicked are drowned by these same waters.

As it is written,

“… he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, …”
Rev 20:6 WEB

One of the shortcoming of the modern church
is ignorance, or the ignoring, of types.

The so called “scholarly” often treat such as unintended impositions on the text. They sometimes view these as things invented to cover for failed prophecies. They ignore the direct statement of types as evidence, and there is much of that. For instance, “a prophet … like you,” and “circumcise your heart, ” and so on. Or David writing in the first person in Psalm 22 of things which never happened to him! This was clearly intentional. Psalm 22 is a very clear prophecy of the crucifixion of the Christ. We should asking question like the Ethiopian Eunuch in Acts 8:34:

“Who is the prophet talking about? About himself, or about someone else?” WEB

Incredibly, many act as if God could not/would not possibly be that sophisticated! This is a huge blind spot in much of our preaching. We have let the unbelief of some, influence the preaching of many believers.

Identifying Some Types, Part 6 of 9

Some practice with types.

Canaan as symbolic of heaven

It is called the land of promise in Heb 11:9. It was a land that was promised to Abraham, Gen 12:1, etc.

The first occupants of that land, were to lose it
because of sin.

And Abraham was promised that his descendants would get this land in later times. This was a prophecy.

“In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.”
Gen 15:16 WEB

Abraham could have said, “What??? That’s a long way off. Oh well, I guess we’ll see?” Instead, of Abraham it is written,

“He believed in Yahweh; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness.”
Gen 15:16 WEB

Abraham was counted righteous BECAUSE he BELIEVED the prophecies of the Lord!

Israel inherited a country they did not build.

“10… to give you, great and goodly cities, which you didn’t build, 11 and houses full of all good things, which you didn’t fill, and cisterns dug out, which you didn’t dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you didn’t plant, and you shall eat and be full;”
Deut 6:10-11

Joshua repeats these promises in Josh 24:13.

Many inhabitants of heaven were unfaithful.

The angels that sinned were cast out of heaven in Revelation 12:7-9. Man is made to rule. He is made for a little while, “a little lower than the angels,” Heb 2:7 WEB. But that will change in the world to come.

“ You make him ruler over the works of your hands.
You have put all things under his feet:”
Psa 8:6 WEB

“2 Don’t you know that the saints will judge the world? … 3 Don’t you know that we will judge angels? …”
1Cor 6:2-3 WEB

And we will inherit a land we did not build.

And we will inherit houses we did not build.

“2 In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.”
Jn 14:2-3 WEB

And Abraham himself was NOT just seeking an
earthly home.

“But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”
Heb 11:16 WEB

And so we sing of heaven:

“To Canaan’s land I’m on my way, where the soul of man never dies,” and many other songs of Canaan and the promised land, as symbolic of heaven.

Some cautions on types.

What then are the proper limits to be observed? I would suggest that as a start, we not try to make symbolism to say anything plainly contrary to the open statements of Scripture. If used properly it will generally supplement and enforce what we should already know.

Men, Angels and the Christ in Prophecy, Part 9 of 9

The author of Hebrews concludes that the purpose of angels is to serve those who will inherit eternal life, Heb 1:14. Then he turns to the subject of men in chapter two. He quotes part of Psalm 8 by David about “man,” and “the world to come,” Heb 2:5.

“6 … “What is man, that you think of him?
Or the son of man, that you care for him?
7 You made him a little lower than the angels;
You crowned him with glory and honor.
8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” …”
Heb 2:6-8a WEB

This is man made in the very image of God, for now a little lower than the angels, and ordained for great things.

So mankind is SUPPOSED TO HAVE dominance
over ALL.

Then comes those things which we all run into in prophecy. Those things which seem odd or out of place. The author notes it appears nothing is left out of man’s control.

“… For in that he subjected all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. …”
Heb 2:8b WEB

Indeed this is the fabric of much of our lives here on earth. We work at this function or that function in managing this earth, and bringing to usefulness its many resources. Those functions may range from killing flies in the kitchen, to managing water resources, to making useful tools and machines for using these resources.

But then there is that part which just does not fit the facts.

“But now we don’t see all things subjected to him, yet.”
Heb 2:8c

Man does not yet have all of this power. There are things missing. There are holes in man’s dominance. We would like to have control of this or that, but, frustratingly, despite great progress in many arenas, much remains outside our control, just as Heb 2:8c says so clearly!

As my books note, such gaps between what is often prophesied, and what is seen in reality, is often the sign of symbolism in the prophecy, of a “type” or a “prototype”.

So man does not have the mastery he should have, yet.

“But we see him who has been made a little
lower than the angels, Jesus,

“because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone. ”
Heb 2:9 WEB

So Hebrews sees man’s dominance as always to be accomplished through Jesus! Through Jesus man recovers his position before God, and achieves his rightful position over creation. So it is not Satan and his angels, or even angels overall, who will dominate the world to come. It is man.

“Don’t you know that we will judge angels?” 1Cor 6:3.

Permanent punishment is prepared for those that oppose God, whether in heaven or in earth.

“Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels;”
Mtt 25:14 WEB
