Common Pitfalls in Interpretation, Part 2

Sometimes we miss big and important messages because we are,

Failing to see the overall message

The Pharisees made fatal mistakes here on several levels. A big one was their rejection of the gentiles as inferior, unclean, to be despised and rejected.

It is true that the Jews were to have nothing
to do with the Canaanites.

In fact, the ancient Canaanites were so wicked that they were to be wiped out.

“2 and when Yahweh your God shall deliver them up before you, and you shall strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them: you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them; 3 neither shall you make marriages with them; …”
Deut 7:2-3

But such commands did not extent
to all peoples in war.

“10 When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it. 11 It shall be, if it make you answer of peace, and open to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.”
Deut 20:10-11

There is more to the instructions here, but the core is that the sanctions on the Canaanites did NOT apply to all nations.

And it is true that the Jews were to be first, IF they
were faithful to God and His Christ.

“Yahweh will make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall be above only, and you shall not be beneath; if you shall listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God, …”
Deut 28:13 WEB

But this did NOT mean that the Gentiles were all to be considered unclean, and not to be associated with.

Also, the Jews were to treat ALL MEN fairly

The stranger who lives as a foreigner with you shall be to you as the native-born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you lived as foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God. ”
Lev 19:34

“Therefore love the foreigner; for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.”
Deut 10:19

The Pharisees missed the big message of
love and compassion in the Lord.

So when their Christ came, who clearly preached love and compassion to ALL … including the gentiles … they rejected their own Christ!

They failed to see the big picture of love and mercy to all … and thus sealed their own doom, because He was the one whom,

“… whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.”
Deut 18:19 WEB

And so it stands, even to this day, for as Jesus said,

“I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”
Jn 8:24 WEB

Those are the words of the one and only Christ of God.

Common Pitfalls in Interpretation, Part 1

There are many ways to get sidetracked in life, and in studying the Bible, and in studying Bible prophecy. Some of these pitfalls, stumbling-blocks the Scriptures often calls them, overlap, and are well worth looking at.

Failing to Use Scripture as a whole

Scripture is not a pick and choose buffet. Unfortunately we as men often tend to try to use the Bible in such ways. Sometimes it is because we simply like certain parts of the Scripture more than others, which is natural, and some part for sure are more important than others. And last but not least it can come from our just being too lazy to do our homework! However:

Scripture is adamant: We need to use
the whole thing!

Moses said it first.

“You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish from it, that you may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God which I command you.”
Deut 4:2 WEB

He reemphasized it again later.

“Whatever thing I command you, that shall you observe to do: you shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
Deut 12:32 WEB

It is true that we are under “the law of Christ” 1Cor 9:21 rather than Moses’s law, which has been nailed to the cross, Col 2:14. Even so, the Bible is a unity from Genesis to Revealtion, and “ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, …” 2Tim 3:16 KJV.
We need to use the whole thing as a unit, to be able to understand what we need to know and do.

In other words, use the whole thing. Now Moses did emphasize that whatever the Messiah commanded, everyone had to do.

“It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.”
Deut 18:19 WEB

And Paul says the same thing.

ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
2Tim 3:16 KJV (emphasis added)

It is true that we use different parts
of Scripture differently.

We are not under the law of Moses, which has been nailed to the cross, Col 2:14. Instead we are under the “law of Christ,” 1Cor 9:21. So we don’t offer animal sacrifices, we have the sacrifice of Christ. And we observe the Lord’s Day (the first day of the week, Acts 20:7 Rev 1:10), not the seventh day, the Sabbath. Even so, the law of Moses is still profitable for “doctrine” (which is really just teaching, didaskalos is the Greek word). An example would be Paul in 1Corinthians 9 using an regulation from Moses law about an ox (Deut 25:3), to prove that ministers of the gospel should be paid. Paul says,

“9 For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it for the oxen that God cares, 10 or does he say it assuredly for our sake? Yes, it was written for our sake,”
1Cor 9:9-10 WEB

Still, failing to use “all scripture” for doctrine
often distorts our vision,

and our understanding of many things, including prophecy. If you really want to distort your understanding of Revelation or Isaiah, do what the liberal seminaries consistently try to do: study those books in isolation from the rest of Scripture. They use fine phrases like, “seeing how a book stands on its own,” but it is can be fatal to real understanding.

You Cannot Die by “Accident.” Even from Covid-19!

The prophet David says.

“5 I laid myself down and slept.
I awakened; for Yahweh sustains me.
6 I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me on every side.”
Psa 3:5-6

Again he says,

“1 Yahweh is my light and my salvation.
Whom shall I fear?
Yahweh is the strength of my life.
Of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evil-doers came at me to eat up my flesh,
Even my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though a host should encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear.
Though war should rise against me,
Even then I will be confident. ”
Psa 27:1-3

Not even a bird can die apart from
the Father’s will.

Jesus argues we should not fear those who can kill the body, but after that can do nothing. Rather, fear God who can kill the body and after that throw us into hell itself. Sparrows are sold for next to nothing, yet,

“… Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father’s will, 30 but the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.”
Mtt 10:29-31

It is NOT that you cannot die.

Jesus spoke of many things, including that special time of persecution just before the end of the age, which will be worse than all persecutions up to that point. Some will be put to death.

“16 You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you they will cause to be put to death. 17 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake.”
Lk 21:16-17

Now “hated by all men” has never happened so far. Many have had compassion for the sufferings of Christians throughout history. At times the saying was that “the blood of the saints was the seed of the church.” But not at that end time! However even of those special persecutions at the end, even if you die … Jesus says of those who even suffer death in verse 17,

“18 And not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will win your lives.”
Lk 21:18

You will be saved entirely, wholly! God’s protection is beyond even the grave. Like Jesus we will be saved, not FROM death, but IN SPITE OF death!

Jesus was “protected,” but yet he died. How is that? Peter put it this way:

“27 For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.”
Acts 4:27-28

So this was all planned by God. Things may be out of your control or my control, but they are not out of God’s control. No one or thing can snatch you out of God’s hands, Jn 10:29. Do not walk in constant fear! Not even for a corona-virus.

Protection from Harm? Even from Covid-19?

Psalm 91 talks about being protected from the hazards of war and life and deadly pestilence.Verse 1 says that if you live with God, you will also be able to rest with Him. God will be your fortress, verse 2. It seems to be speaking in general terms of the righteous.

“For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler,
And from the deadly pestilence. ”
Psa 91:3

It goes on to say that God will cover you with His wings. His faithfulness will be “your shield and rampart.” You will not need to be afraid.

“5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day;
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.”
Psa 91:5-6

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand. You will only look at the people getting their dues, because you have trusted in God and not in men, verse 9.

No evil shall happen to you,
Neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.”
Psa 91:10

Angels will guard you!

“For he will give his angels charge over you,
To guard you in all your ways.”
Psa 91:11

This breath of description surely includes things like virus, corona-viruse, and bacteria. Verse 2 says, “I will say of Yahweh,” but it does not tell us who the author is. Then it says in verse 3, “For he will deliver you,” “He will cover you,” and so on. Is this speaking of a particular person? Who is this “you”?

Then we see that the devil quotes
this psalm of the Christ.

“5 Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will give his angels charge concerning you.’ and,
‘On their hands they will bear you up,
So that you don’t dash your foot against a stone.’””
Mtt 4:5-6

When the devil is wrong in Mtt 3:3, Jesus corrects him. Here He seems to acknowledge this truth, but says,

“Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”
Mtt 3:7

So Jesus answers the devil as it was true, but that men should not put God to the test, as it says in Deut 6:16.

Is this only about Jesus?

That would be an easy thing to argue. Then on the other hand look at many other Scriptures which argue for God’s care for believers, both in the Old and New Testaments. I am not talking about unqualified safety, but God’s care for His faithful ones. Notice what David says:

“The angel of Yahweh encamps round about those who fear him,
And delivers them.”
Psa 34:7

Is that a lie? A Scripture that failed? (cf Jn 10:35) Jesus says that children’s angels always have access to God to plead their cause, Mtt 18:10. And Heb 1:13-14 says looking after Christians is the job of angels.

Keys to Prophecy: A Proper Mindset, Part II

In Genesis 19 Lot had been told a prophecy that Sodom was to be destroyed. He was getting his family ready to leave, and it says,

“Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up! Get out of this place, for Yahweh will destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking.”
Gen 19:14 WEB

They could not see how this could be, so they did not believe Lot’s warnings, and so were destroyed with the city. We need to have an eternal focus if we are comprehend and believe what we need to in prophecy.

We Need Focus on Jesus and a Future World.

looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Heb 12:2 WEB

We need to absorb that eternal perspective which Jesus exemplified in his life here on earth. Often our worldly perspective comes from the world, which does even recognize God working in the world, so the things taught in prophecy seem so outlandish that we cannot conceive such a thing as happening, so we reject the correct answers out of hand.

We need to focus on the “world to come,” Heb 2:5.

“1 If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory. ”
Col 3:1-14 WEB

These things are necessary to “get it.”

Also, prophecy is much like learning math.

If we do not learn the first principles, or even outright reject them, we will never get the right answers on more involved prophecies. Many do this on Bible prophecy, both inside and outside of the faith.

The Angle of Entry is important.

Whether we see what we need to see often depend on the angle at which we approach a subject. To whatever extent we have rejected the many basic premises of Scripture, to that extent we are less likely to see, or to understand what we need to see. Often even believers do these things with even realizing it. If we come from false perspectives we are less likely to see or understand, or if the answer is too foreign to our worldly view, we may simply say, how can that be? and reject what is said. That sadly is often the case. We understand what is siad and reject it as impossible to ever be!

It is important to be willing to be open to anything which God says, and to assume that God is right and that He indeed foresees what will actually happen.

Keys to Prophecy: There is More Than One Wide Spread Tribulation.

It is sometimes missed but there are actually several periods of extreme trouble in the Christian Age. This is the way Paul describes the issues.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”
2Tim 3:1 KJV

It is not just a single perilous or difficult or harsh time, but perilous timeS, plural.

Russia, China, and Eastern Europe had an anti-Christian
blood baths in the 20th century,
France in late 18th century.

There have been multiple attempts to bull-doze away Christianity and prepare the way for the worship of Satan and his special seed. Rome and the caesars were so used, until Christianity outright conquered Rome, as in Dan 2:44, and other passages. Islam was used in this way. The French Revolution was another attempt, and was intended to spread from nation to nation, but didn’t have the impact desired. The Communists also attempted world revolution, and did conquer one-third of the world before imploding. Communism still shows some lingering signs of life even in the United States in the early 21st century, and many of the old Communist organizations now seem to want to carry a banner of environmental emergencies to drive the destruction of any who might oppose them.

It seems from Scripture that two special times of tribulation/stress will come.

One is the times of stress in when the Jews turn
to Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth in faith.

And yes, Jesus is called “Rabbi” some thirteen times in the gospels, but it is sometimes translated as “Master” of “Teacher.”

It is clearly prophesied in the Old Testament that this will happen, and is verified in the New Testament, but many gloss over the texts. Moses, after denouncing the stubbornness and sins of Israel, is the first to announce it.

Coming in September, 2020, Jewish Chronicles will be an overview of Jewish history and Scripture as it pertains to these things.

When you are in distress, and all these things are come on you, in the latter days you shall return to Yahweh your God, and listen to his voice:”
Deut 4:30 nf

This will be an extreme period stress for many nations. It appears to begin with a world-wide persecution of Christians. It is dealt with in detail in Ezekiel 37 and 38, and Zechariah, and also in my forthcoming book, Jewish Chronicles. It will be so severe that is seems it will become yet another “type,” symbolic of the end of this present universe.

The greatest tribulation will be right at the end.

It is literally called “the great, the tribulation” in Greek.

… “These are those who came out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes, and made them white in the Lamb’s blood.”
Rev 7:14 WEB

This time Christianity will be “overcome”/conquered.

“It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him. ”
Rev 13:7 WEB

The Greek word is nikao, to conquer, to overcome, to have the victory.

Never yet has any one government had authority over every nation. Never yet has Christianity been “overcome” world-wide. But it will happen, for a short while … just before Jesus intervenes.

Keys to Prophecy: Revelation Applies to the ENTIRE Christian Age.

The principal powers at work during the Christian Age are the same throughout. They are:

Jesus of Nazareth, the One and Only
Son of God

He is ignored by most, but He is indeed Lord of Lords and King of kings, Rev 19:16. He is THE major power of the Christian Age. He is a conquerer!

“And behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow. A crown was given to him, and he came forth conquering, and to conquer.”
Rev 6:2 WEB

Jesus has complete authority.

… “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.”
Mtt 28.28 WEB

All authority where? “In heaven and on earth.” As God has operated in the past, so now Jesus rules the nations, and has,

“26 … appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.”
Acts 17:26-27 WEB

He must reign (presently and continuously) until ALL His enemies are destroyed, 1Cor 15:24-25.

Mystery Babylon the Great

This is a religio-commercial entity. It evidently dominates world trade for the entire Christian Age. It does not control all of it, but it is evidently a central facilitator of world trade. It is pictured in Rev 18:11-13 as selling a little bit of everything, and so rich that “she” drinks out of gold cups, and is extravagantly clothed with gold and jewels in Rev 17:3-4. It says that,

“The kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived wantonly with her, will weep and wail over her, when they look at the smoke of her burning,”
Rev 18:9 WEB

She is the arranger of wars and conflicts on earth. Why? To make money out of those conflicts. It says,

“In her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on the earth.”
Rev 18:24 WEB

What a staggeringly comprehensive statement!

And she rides the Satanic dragon that has seven heads and ten horns, Rev 17:3! She rides the Mystery of Lawlessness, the seldom noticed “beast” organization of Rev 13:1-2, of which there are seven “heads,” directors.

The Mystery of Lawlessness

The mystery of lawlessness is a much smaller organization than Mystery Babylon the Great, and is opposed to Mystery Babylon, but also allows itself to be used for her purposes. It is a very highly leveraged satanic organization, a dragon (compare Revelation 12), and is already in operation in the first century, 2Thes 2:7. It is guided by a directory of seven men/kings, and it directs ten centers of power. It hates the harlot, and before the end will destroy her at God’s instigation, Rev 17:16-17.

None of the these powers are absolute, except Jesus the Christ. The others plot and plan and coerce as best they can, and have whatever triumphs God allows. In history they have both many victories and many dismal defeats. In worldly terms they are intimidating, but they are doomed from the start.

Covid-19 and We Will All Die

Remember? The terrible winter of 2017-18?

The sheer terror of every moment? The anticipation that you might catch it next? That someone might die? That someone you know might die? Do you remember the gripping terror of every moment in the winter of 2017 to 2018? You don’t? You don’t remember the 2017-2018 winter being horrible? You don’t! Well, the CDC says that 80,000 people died of the flu in the winter of 2017 to 2018. 80,000! (AP interview with Dr. Robert Redfield of the CDC, September 26, 2018, https://apnews.com/818b5360eb7d472480ebde13da5c72b5.) Redfield is current head of the CDC.

Why didn’t you think it was so bad in the winter of 2017-18?

Dr. Robert Redfield, current head of the CDC. By Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – https://www.cdc.gov/about/images/leadership/leaders/cdcdirector-300px.jpg, Public Domain,

The answer is, you didn’t have the media pumping it up! You didn’t see constant reminders of hospital death’s. You didn’t see your favorite news or weather reporters crouching in fear, and broadcasting from home in horror of possibly catching the virus and … dying! Did you?

Notice that almost all of their models, their projections, have been wrong! Originally they said 2.2 million Americans would die. But it isn’t going to happen. They emptied the hospitals so that they could care for the dying Covid-19 patients … and the hospitals stayed empty. Trump sent a hospital ship to NY, and built two new hospitals in Central Park, and they stayed empty. NY said they needed 30,000 ventilators. Trump said he could only send 5,000. The press said that was outrageous. But it ended up NY sent away some ventilators! https://www.theblaze.com/news/new-york-giving-away-ventilators. It is a new media lie everyday. You have already forgotten the old lie, because the new false projection is scaring the wits out of you! Assuming that the originators made honest mistakes, we still should NOT be listening to their models, with this record of failures. The media and the politicians are NOT experts, and the “experts” have been consistently sold us bad models!

Now Some Question These Projections Entirely

Dr. Deborah Birx. Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=88791250

According to a Washington Post article, Dr Birx said, “There is nothing from the CDC that I can trust.” She said that they were exaggerating Covid-19 deaths by as much as 25%. https://ussanews.com/News1/2020/05/12/dr-birx-claims-the-cdc-inflated-covid-19-death-tolls-by-25/.

I have heard before that competent authorities questioned the CDC’s estimates on for instance, flu deaths. These are after all, statistical extrapolations. No one is really in a position to do a real head count. But you says, someone might die! And that is right! So, let’s take some CDC figures at face value.

The CDC says 2,813,503 died in 2017.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm. These are deaths from all causes. This means about 234,458 people died every month. Well this says that someone will die, does die, every year. Nearly three million of them in America, each year. And most who die are elderly with serious underlying conditions! Who would have guessed? They have heart problems, they have diabetes or they are very overweight or have severe breathing problems, and so on. Your author is part of this group. Might your author die from COVID-19? Yes! Should we shut down the world because you author might die? I don’t think so. So what is the root of our problem?

Sin came into this world from the wrongs of our ancestors.

The truth is, we will ALL die. Coronavirus or not.

“12 Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned. … 14 Nevertheless death reigned … even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.”
Rom 5:12, 14

Yes we use medicines and treatments to try hinder and delay death, rightfully so, even in Scripture. Your author probably would not be alive today, and might have even died in childhood, without modern medicine. But in the end even that cannot undo death.

Prophecy says only Jesus can do that!

“25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.”
1Cor 15:25-26

That is a prophecy. And it hasn’t happened yet. And it does matter!

Keys to Prophecy: The Most Powerful Institution on Earth

Now you and I are entering a section of inferred evaluations of our situation here on earth.

Regardless of the opinions of many, God clearly prophesied in Daniel 2 that in the days of the Roman Empire that,

“In the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall the sovereignty of it be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.”
Dan 2:44 WEB

That was a clear prophecy, which is also repeated in Daniel chapter 9, giving more details of the timing of these thing, all of which is dealt with in more detail in Prophecy Principles.

Then at the very right time both John the Baptist and Jesus came saying “the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” Mtt 3:2 WEB and many other verses. Lastly Jesus told his disciples that the kingdom would come with power before some of them died, Mk 9:1, etc.

Incredibly, some very conservative Bible believers
teach that the Father and the Son blew it, just
didn’t foresee what would happen, and
that these prophecies FAILED!

That is foolish, and ignores the clear testimony of the kingdom being in existence (Col 1:13, etc), and that Jesus is now the ruler of the kings on earth (Rev 1:13), and that He has now ALL authority in heaven and on earth, Mtt 28:18.

What authority supports the Christian?
ALL authority.

It is true that we are counted as only sheep to be slaughtered (Psa 44:22, Rom 8:36), but in all of these thing we are MORE than conquerers (Rom 8:37), and in this same section it names many of the many things which cannot overcome us in Christ (Rom 8:35-39).

The church is the most powerful institution
in the entire world.

Paul preaching in Athens. These simple things have had staggering effects on history.

It seems small and fragile and about to pass away, but it will never pass away, and will in the end overcome ALL of its adversaries. The prayers of the saints ascend to God in heaven, and at the end of the day, judgment is poured out on God’s enemies, and the saints are still around (compare for instance Rev 5:8, 16:1, etc.)

Many may gather against God’s people

“15 Behold, they may gather together, but not by me: whoever shall gather together against you shall fall because of you. 16 Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals, and brings forth a weapon for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. 17 No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Yahweh, and their righteousness which is of me, says Yahweh.”
Isa 54:15-17 WEB

The most powerful institution on earth is the church/kingdom of the saints. It has the full power of God behind it. This is no exaggeration, and the Satanic enemies of the church fully realize these things, and try to seduce it from trusting in Jesus the Christ. Also clearly, this power is often unrealized, even among Christians.
